Newly Naturally Feature: Brittany

Hi guys, my name is Brittany McClanton and I’m from Greensboro, NC but currently reside in Charlotte, NC where I attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for about 7 months now but I had a few bumps in the road.  It took me a while to return natural because at the time everyone was going natural and it seem like people were just
following other people and not having a meaning to return natural.  I started going natural the summer of 2012 around the middle of July.

What motivated you to transition?
What convinced me to go natural was the price of relaxers in Charlotte.  It was hard being a college student and pay for the prices to get your hair done every two weeks; I was digging a whole in my pockets.  So one day, I got really tired of my hair and couldn’t wait to start the process so I end up chopping it all off.  At the time I was a little self- conscious about my hair because I just started a new relationship and didn’t know what he would say about it.  We both got used to it as long as I moisturized it. LOL.  As it started to grow I end up getting a lot of protective hairstyles so my hair could grow a little faster.  Every time I took my protective hairstyle out I would get so excited to see how much my hair grew, yea I was a little impatient.  My friends could not keep up with all the hair changes I was doing but what can I say I don’t like looking the same for a long time.
What has been the most memorable part of your journey?

Tragically, I decided to go to a hair salon after months of being natural and my curl pattern was more defined than ever.  Long story short I end up getting heat damaged and my curl pattern was never the same after that.  So I end up cutting my hair again after already having a nice length to my hair.  After a while I got over it, its just hair it will grow back.  Since I chopped my hair off again, my regiments are really helping me with my natural hair process.  My favorite deep conditioner that I recommend this to anyone is Greek plan yogurt, honey, and olive oil.  This leaves hair feeling so soft and it smells good that’s the best of both worlds.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Some of the natural hair sites that I usually attend are www.KinkyCurlyCoilyMe.com and otherblogs as well.  I currently blog myself about my hair as well, I like to give my personal testimonies on products and new things I have tried.  Being that I cut my hair again hopefully this process will be smoother than the last.  To the ladies that are starting out to return natural have fun with your hair and definitely be patient.
