Curly Girl Feature: Shaye

My nickname is Shaye and I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in Florida.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 1 year and 2 months.

What motivated you to transition?
I love curly hair and I love the whole aspect of being natural even though some may not agree or like the way African Americans look with “natural hair.” I’m a rebel and I want to stand out of the crowd not blend in with the norm. I went natural for me not for anyone else.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I transitioned from my short hair cut. I wouldn’t of have wanted to cut it any shorter. 🙂

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
I wouldn’t say it was easy but I def wouldn’t say it was hard. I feel, it really depends on how serious you are about going natural. In my transitioning faze, I did alot of protective styles, and I still do them to this day.

What is your hair routine (including fav products)?
I love Olive Oil Edge control, to moisturize my scale is use EVOO, I Love Lo’Real Ever Line its 100% Vegan, Sulfate and Parben free. I also like Organics Hair Mayonnaise; I use that for my wash n go’s.

What are some of your favorite hairstyles?
I’ve never done a twist out or anything like that… I tried it once and it turned out horrible! When I wear my natural hair, I literally just wash my hair and apply my hair mayonnaise and that is! I would like to try some styles in the future but for the most part I dont have time.

What tips/suggestions do you have for other transitioners?
Just be patience. I honestly did do alot of protective styles when I first started transitioning. I recommend that you do protective style in the begging then venture out and start find styles for your hair and the right products for you. I mean its your choice im just letting you know what worked for me. If not the time of person that would have a problem with seeing the whole process of going natural and your a patience person then go for it!!! either way both way will help you learn about your hair with the products you will try and out and styles you will try as well.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I tried going natural before and it didnt work. I was uneducated and knew nothing about going natural! I also was younger and didnt have the funds to buy the things I needed to help tame my hair (well at least I thought).
