Fashionable Friday: Kinks Are The New Pink

Hello! My name is Ashlei and I’m the Creator & Author of the personal style and natural hair blog – Kinks are the new Pink!

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as evolving, especially right now as I’m noticing a change in items I’m gravitating to and purchasing. It’s weird to admit it, but my style is starting to become a little more grown up, which I’m actually finding to be very exciting and I’m so happy I have the blog to document that growth process.

In general I would say my style leans towards a boho-chic aesthetic. I love classic, well-tailored pieces with something a little unexpected added, such as a bold color, funky print, or cool vintage accessories. It’s like having a little touch of my kind-of-kooky personality. 🙂

How do you decide what to wear in the morning?

Lately it’s been based on what the temperature will be for the day, haha! But usually I simply go off of whatever mood I wake up in, what I have planned for the day, and what I’ve recently been inspired by. Street style posts on Pinterest have a big influence, if I see something I really like I’ll immediately try to recreate it the next day.

What are your favorite wardrobe pieces?

Definitely my shoes – specifically ankle boots. I have quite the collection of booties, it’s the first thing I gravitate to when entering any store, my friends make fun of me all the time, but I can’t help it – they’re the best shoe.

In terms of actual pieces of clothing, any sort of jacket or blazer – I have a sizeable collection of those too. I love the ease of throwing on a statement jacket or sharp blazer to pull a look together, plus layering is one of my all time favorite things to do. 🙂

I’m also starting to build a collection of vintage jewelry. I love how these are typically one-of-a-kind pieces; it’s just another way to add some personality to your overall style.

Where do you typically shop for clothes and accessories?

I do a lot of online shopping! Clothing typically comes from popular sites such as Zara, ASOS, NastyGal, and H&M, though I love finding the occasional piece at independent boutiques. Shoes are usually from the same places, though I have become quite the active member on ShoeMint – they get me every month! And then other accessories, such as jewelry and handbags, I like to find in vintage stores or on Etsy & eBay.

Let’s talk hair. How long have you been natural? What is your normal regimen?

I just celebrated my 3 year hair-anniversary last month! I can’t believe it’s only been 3 years, feels so much longer and if I wasn’t so darn scissor happy I would probably have a pretty sizeable fro. Haha!

I’m actually in the middle of my own grow out challenge, in effort to have longer locks by the time my wedding rolls around next year, so when before my regimen was pretty lax, I’m now trying (keyword: trying) to keep to a more strict routine.

My regimen includes sticking with a specific wash routine (co-wash 1x week, shampoo every 2 weeks), keeping my hair moisturized throughout the day with my diy moisturizing spray, raw shea butter, and products from the Shea Moisture line; using low-manipulation styles – I’m slowly perfecting my twist out; and maintain a healthy diet – including drinking more water, exercise, and staying away from more processed foods.

Do you have a signature hairstyle?

I wouldn’t say I’ve developed a signature hairstyle. I do love my twist outs and have been playing around with the exposed bobby pin trend. I’m the type of person who loves playing around with my hair – from cutting it off, to letting it grow, to getting braids. I would definitely get a little bored if I only stayed with one hairstyle.

How does your natural hair work with your style?

I believe my natural hair makes me look more like, me. I struggled a lot with my relaxed hair and was always feeling insecure about how it looked, but with my natural curls I feel much more confident and willing to express myself either through my hair or personal style.

Are you working on any ventures that we should know about?

I’m about to re-launch my clothing store – Salvaged Racks! I’ve been working on the new site design for the past month and I’m finally ready to re-release it in the next couple of weeks! I’m so excited, it looks 100x better than our old site and we’ve got lots of new goodies that’ll be going on sale as well!

In addition, I’m working on setting up a pop-up shop/styling event with both Salvaged Racks and Kinks are the new Pink for sometime this coming summer!
