Fashionable Friday Feature: Kym

Greetings. My name is Kym Williams. My friends call me Kymmy. I never really liked the name but I think it’s endearing when they do. I live in Long beach, California. I’ve never met people so proud to be from a city in my life but after living here for the last 13 years…I can see why.

How would you describe your style?
My style?

Hmmm…I would consider it a blend of 80’s and 90’s mixed with current trends. But there are times when I get bored with my style and will veer completely left with it. Example: One day I woke up and decided that I absolutely did not want to wear any color (mind you before that I was known for mixing and matching color and prints) and from that day until about 11 months later…I wore nothing but black. Not just black…but large bow ties and giant crinolines (very Victorian) but still managed to stay fashion forward. I’ve had summers inspired by teen vogue and winters inspired by African Safari summers. One could catch me in a tuxedo one day and form fitting lace the next. But If I had to put “my style” in a box, I would consider it retro.

How do you decide what to wear in the morning?

Deciding what to wear isn’t too bad. It usually revolves around one piece (whatever I just bought that I can’t wait to wear) then the outfit is created around that. No matter what it is. A piece of jewelry, a pair of socks, or a purse, it doesn’t matter.

What are your favorite wardrobe pieces?

The things I love the most are usually the most boring so I’ll just dish on some of the fun things I have. Last year I acquired a pair of sunflower printed Joyrich pants. They’re men’s drop crotch sweatpants so I just hike them up to make them high waist and a little more feminine. I’d love to wear them the way they were designed but I’m a shapely woman and unfortunately for me, wearing men’s wear when you’re 42″ around the hips and butt doesn’t work out the way one would like for it to.

I have a small collection of vintage Disney sweaters that I adore; Vintage sequin jackets and sweaters; a small collection of skittle colored suede pumps. So many things! It’s tough to choose!

Where do you typically shop for clothes and accessories?

Zara and H&M are the spot when it comes to cheap fashion forward styles. But I love all the department store outlets like Nordstrom rack, Nieman Marcus’s “Last Call” and Saks Fifth Ave’s “Off Fifth”. For a girl like me with 5star taste and 2star budget, there’s nothing like getting a pair of Burberry shoes for $299 vs. the $900 that they originally cost.

Let’s talk hair. How long have you been natural? What is your normal regimen.

Honestly, I wouldn’t consider myself “natural”. Between washing my hair and the end result, there is a considerable amount of effort put into effect. But I’ve been wearing a “natural” look for like the last 12 years.

Do you have a signature hairstyle?

My signature hair style is loose roller curls. I like it best when it’s big and fluffy.

How does your natural hair work with your style?

Considering that my style is pretty retro/vintage, I think my 70’s hair works perfectly to accentuate that look. But when I do dress really trendy/current (hipster-ish) I think my hair contrast with the style really well also. It gives the trend a little bit of a different kind of aesthetic.

Are you working on any ventures that we should know about?

I recently quit my job of 9 years to possibly pursue being a creative director. I mainly want to direct and style fashion advertisements and eventually be able to create full editorials, Vogue or W magazine status. So currently I’m building a portfolio that I can eventfully use to sell myself. Fingers crossed.

How can we stay connected with you?

I’m currently working on a site where I can feature my ads and hopefully get work helping fashion brands to marketing their product. I’m hoping to have that up and functioning in the next two weeks. In the mean time, you can find me on Instagram @k_merica. I feature some of my work on there.
