The cultures and location of people within the African diaspora may vary, but we are all connected by our beautiful crowns (i.e hair). The distinctiveness of Black hair ties  a group of people together as we live in countries around the world. Black hair has been used throughout history to identify people. Our love, rejection, and reconnection with our hair has shaped our culture.

The I am Global, Global Couture Foundation presents, “The Cultural and Historical Significance of Black Natural Hair.” This presentation is intended for natural hair lovers, globetrotters, and those who are culturally curious. It is a reflection of the current state of Black hair around the world. “The Cultural Significance of Black Natural Hair,” highlights people and events that have shaped attitudes towards black hair through video song and facts. Furthermore, the presentation emphasizes how negative views of Black hair has often resulted in exclusion and discrimination. For example, The pencil test fueled apartheid laws in South African and the comb test forbid Blacks with hair that was not straightened from joining some churches. On the contrary, kinks, curls and naps should be embraced. The presentation shows that going natural can promote a deeper understanding of self identity while being a fun experience. Pride and knowledge of black hair can lead to great things. Madam CJ Walker and Garrett A. Morgan  began their empires by creating hair care product lines and a Rastafarian gained recognition around the world. Black hair is still controversial in today’s society which is why it is important to know learn about the history and significance of Black hair.
