​Tell us about yourself. Hi, my name is Kayedee. I am from the small isle of Grenada, born and grown. I have a passion for accounting and have been a lover of my hair for a very long time. On realizing damaging my hair with chemicals just to fit in wasn’t worth it, I decided to embrace my natural curls and accept the myself the way God made me.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like? I have been natural for 17 years, however there was a 5 year span where I chemically straightened my hair, leading to four big chops.

What made you go natural? I decided to return to being natural because other than my hair being damaged and chemical burns I received every time I had to do a touch up, I simply missed my natural curls and the volume I received so every chance I got I would wear my relaxed hair curly. I transitioned for about two or three months then I big chopped.

How would you describe your hair or its personality? I would say my hair does whatever it wants. There are days when I would be able to style it the way I want and then there are those days when it is would not cooperate.

​What do you love about being natural? I love the versatility my hair offers me. Even though I don’t apply any heat to my curls I have the choice to wear it curly one day and straight the next.

What’s the most memorable part of going natural? Has it been easy or difficult? There is no single memorable part because all of it is memorable, but if I had to say it would be when I first big chopped and seeing myself with short hair. During my hair journey it has been both easy and difficult, from being frustrated with not finding products that work to ​the joy of finally being able to retain moisture.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration? I wore my hair in a bun for almost my whole transitioning period but my favorite do now and back when I big chopped would be my wash and goes and twist outs.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them? My experiences have been quite pleasant, I don’t remember having any negativity. My friends and family were happy that I was returning natural. Most of my family members never liked my hair relaxed anyway.

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets! I shampoo my hair once or twice per month with a Garnier shampoo (Love Garnier <3) and co-wash with a Garnier Conditioner in between. I pre-poo with coconut oil before every wash over night. Almost every time I wash I do my honey & coconut oil hair mask and twice per month I do a deep conditioner. I usually use products from my kitchen to do this. I use Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler and Leave In because I seal with Black Jamaican Castor Oil mixed with Vitamin E oil. Sometimes I use coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil or shea butter. In between washes when I have to moisturize I spritz my hair with a mixture of water, glycerine, and vitamin e oil then use the same oil combinations to seal. Additionally, I sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf every night.

Where do you find your inspiration, i.e. bloggers, vloggers, etc.? My favorite natural YouTubers would be The Chic Natural, MahoganyCurls, and Ahfro Baang. There are a lot more that inspire me just as equally as the three listed.

What advice or words of inspiration would you give others on or seeking the natural journey? My advice, there is nothing better than being natural so embrace every kink, every curl and every coil and accept yourself as the beautiful and unique individual that God placed on this earth.
