Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. (Name, where you’re from, etc)
My name is Kendra Williams, age 26, from North Carolina. I have a passion for reading and writing, in hopes of one day being a published bestseller. For now, I’m working on becoming known in the natural hair community. I have been natural my whole life, I was using heat mostly until June 2012 when I decided to return back to my curls. I haven’t looked back since.
Are you a transitioner or a big chopper? And why?
I didn’t transition or big chop even though I have thought about cutting my hair and starting all over again just to see what I would look like with short hair.
How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair as different. I don’t know my hair texture (haven’t really found the desire to know what it is). I refer to my hair as Pocahontas, when straight, or Diana, when curly. As the days go by and I don’t re-twist or re-braid it definitely gets bigger.
What do you love most about your hair?
I love the fact that I can change my hairstyles daily and sometimes people don’t recognize me.
What has been the most memorable part of the journey?
The most memorable part of the journey was when I completed the 1 year no heat challenge. If you know me, you would know that I hardly ever had my hair curly until June 2012. I’m going for 2 years now of hopes that I don’t go back straight at all. I haven’t made up my mind yet.
What are your favorite hairstyles?
I have been wearing twistouts, updos, two strand twists, and braidouts.
What is your hair regimen?
My hair regimen as of right now is definitely for a cowash. As I am cowash, As I am sulfate-free shampoo, Tre’semme Naturals conditioner, Giovanni Tea Tree hampoo and conditioner, Eden’s body works curl defining crème and of course water are all products that I use. I try to get at least my 64 ounces of water every day.
Who are your favorite vloggers and bloggers?
My favorite YouTubers are Naptural85, eclark6, mahoganycurls, and gabe fix are the only ones I watch right now. I would love to find more natural hair YouTubers, but I definitely love the Global Couture blog. Thanks for the chance to get featured.
Anything else you would like to share?
A little inspiration: Don’t give up on your journey. You can’t judge your hair by what someone else has on their head. You can only give 110% to your journey and enjoy it everyday even when you feel like cutting it off to start over. Trust me, I’ve had moments where I wanted to cut all my hair off, but I remembered this journey isn’t about them, it’s about me. Never let someone tell you that natural isn’t for everybody; everybody doesn’t choose to embrace it. Embrace your natural hair and love yourself because if you don’t love yourself in the natural state, nobody else will. Don’t be afraid to compliment another natural on their hair, trust me it will spark a never ending conversation about hair and hair products, even in the store. I love those conversations in the store.
Advice: Have Patience and Never Give up.
Styling tips: Embrace the frizz. It’s not always going to be frizzy, but a little frizz isn’t always a bad thing. Invest in a satin pillowcase, satin scarf and a satin bonnet; they will save your hair from breaking off and drying out. Oh yeah and don’t forget the lovely t-shirt trick to help with that frizz.
