Naturally Fierce Feature: Luna

Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. Luna is my name. I am from Phoenix, AZ. I am mixed with African American and Mexican. Raised by my mother who was Mexican so you can imagine how much fun it was figuring out this hair. I hated when it was time to get my hair done…Dreadful! Going natural was the best decision I made. You really never know your potential until you really let go of societies idea of acceptable hair.

How long have you been natural? 5 years strong.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why? I was a transitioner due to the fact that I was also self-conscience about the length of my hair.

How would you describe your hair? I would say my hair is spiral, springy, and oh so dry without any manipulation. I’m usually moisturizing my hair at least twice a day. I believe the dryness can come from the desert heat as well.

What do you love most about your hair? I love the volume the most. I used to just love length when I wore more hair only straight. Now I will take big hair full hair over anything.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both? The most memorable moment was when I cut my bangs to create more of a retro look. I never knew what to do with my curls. Now I just let them do what they like. I love the bangs look on natural women.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’? Honestly I would say the best transitioning method for me was high buns or half sew ins to keep my hair covered.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from family or others? My mother has since passed and she always told me I had beautiful hair so the fact that she is not around for her to say I told you so is a bit sad but my family loves it for the most part. They have their jokes here and there since me and my siblings are the only biracial children in the family. Everyone else is Mexican, so I always envied my cousins’ hair has a child. Not anymore!!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? The best thing I use is castor oil. I know it has been pretty popular as of late but I have been using it for almost five years. The smell not so much but I mix it with other oils to help with the smell. I oil my scalp and ends with castor oil 3 times a week. I actually let it absorb into my scalp and I do not rinse until wash day wish is only once or twice a month. Like I stated before my hair is pretty dry so leaving the oil on doesn’t make my hair nasty oily. It actually helped with my dry scalp and breakage. I don’t have a particular shampoo that I use. I have tried them all. I try to only shampoo when I feel my hair needs it. As far as trimming hair, my take on it is that once you have a healthy routine going and your hair is in good shape you only need to trim your hair once or twice a year, yes I said it! I have no split ends and it’s been almost 8 months since my last trim. Just remember you will have to trim off bad ends until your hair gets to a good state.  I use shea moisture products and I love them all.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs? To be honest, I really haven’t gotten too much on the net to research other natural sisters but if you have any please send them my way I would love to see how other naturals are doing.
