We know what looks fabulous on us, what will turn heads and what make us feel good about ourselves. When it comes to our fashion sense, we have it down to a “T.” And while we can tell you the latest trends in urban wear or the “flyest” jeans on designer runways, what we still don’t seem to get is how unmistakably dope our natural hair is to our style and way of dress.

Think about it. How many of your girls have said that they have to figure out what kind of hair they are going to wear with an outfit? Or have openly and almost vehemently protested the “nappiness” of their unrelaxed mane to the point of not even wanting to leave the house without it being weaved up; or at least covered with a wig. The sad truth is that for a lot of women of color, natural hair equals raggedness and they can’t be ratchet by the head because that will mess up their “look.”

Maybe this is your way of thinking too, which is understandable to a degree for the most part. I mean the image we see of women, regardless of race, mainly show long flowing curls or straight relaxed hair. We have been subconsciously programmed to think “Straight hair, don’t care.” Do care! Natural hair is so embedded in the fabric of fashion’s history. The natural women who came before us that ushered in bell bottoms and skinny jeans weren’t all rocking conks or press and curls. The Angela Davis’s of yesteryear where natural sistas who sported the latest fashions, the hottest designers and did it all wearing an Afro or twists.

Where do you think big hoop earrings and chunky necklaces got their starts? It wasn’t in the boxes of Dark N’ Lovely.

Women seek to be empowered through the clothes they wear and have been for decades. There is something freeing about being able to wear what you want to express yourself. From Beyoncé to Halle Berry there are countless examples of female expression through fashion but the women portraying these images hardly ever done natural hair.

Women understand that their hair and how it looks is directly connected to what they wear. There is still an overwhelming flock to Brazilian and Malaysian hair is a clear indication that the conversation about natural hair and its complement to fashion needs to be revisited.

So here’s the truth: a cute twist out looks awesome with a romper and heels and a wash n go is the perfect hair style for a date night in your favorite harem pants and crop top. Natural hair is beautiful hair and beautiful hair goes with anything.
