Naturally Fierce Feature: Brittany

Brittany Jones and I’m from Lufkin, Texas (a small country town population about 36,000). I’m 27 years old. I actually knew nothing about natural hair in the beginning. It started with me just wanting to stretch my relaxers to get my hair to grow longer. I used to get my hair relaxed every 4-5 weeks and my hair would reache like neck length and never seemed to grow much longer then that. Which was confusing to me because I had long hair when I was younger.

How long have you been natural?

June 30th will be 3 years completely natural that is the last time I put a relaxer on my hair! Oct. 7th will be 3 years post big chop. I only transitioned for about 3 months.

What motivated you to go natural? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I didn’t really transition I went the first 6 weeks just keeping my hair wrapped and I only flat-ironed like once 1 a week maybe. I ended up getting a sew-in for an event and I wore it for 7 weeks. When I took it down I couldn’t do anything with my hair because I had never went longer then 5 weeks without relaxing it and I was overwhelmed because it had been 13 weeks! I knew I didn’t want to relax so I called my beautician and scheduled my big chop the very next day!

What has been the mostmemorable part of your journey?
The most memorable I would have to say is inspiring my mother so much that she is now natural to. My sister is as well but she has been natural for about 5 or 6 years but her hair is loc’d!!

What are some of your favoritetransitioning hairstyles?
I didn’t transition really so I didn’t have a go to style but now my favorite style is braidouts!! I also love flat-twist outs!

  (Love everything about this look!)

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorablereactions from family or others?

I actually had a pretty good response from the people in my life. Some just had to adjust to seeing me with no hair and a few were just a bit apprehensive at what exactly I would do and how I would look natural. Now my family and friends are like huge fans! Lol they obsess over my hair and always brag to other naturals about my hair! Lol

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

My texture of hair is more of a 4b/4c with some 3b at the nape area. I currently braid/twist my hair every night, I wash my hair maybe once every 2 weeks or so. I used to co-wash every couple days but with my texture it just seems my hair would get dry or I didn’t really see a benefit. Products that I love Jamaican Mango N’ Lime creme wax, I’ve recently discovered the Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter moisturizer. If I use the creme wax I do not apply everyday because its heavy and can cause build up. I apply it and then for maybe the next 3 days I just spritz my hair with water. The mango butter I can apply everyday because its much lighter and does not weigh my hair down. I have not found a conditioner that I’m crazy about yet. Shampoo I currently use Herbal Essence Hello Hydration. I know it has sulfate but the creme was has mineral oil and petrolatum in it so I use that particular shampoo to really cleanse my hair and scalp. Again only shampoo about every 2 weeks or so. Do what works best!! Oils I use are argan, castor, and evoo!

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

Some of my favorite youtubers are Loveislandbeauty, Naptural85, Mynaturalsistas, Simplyounique, Iknowlee, Msvaughntv, and Mstanish

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirationalwords?

Words of wisdom do what works best for your hair! In the beginning I was a major product junkie and I would do things that weren’t really beneficial to MY texture so I would get frustrated a lot but now I keep it simple. Also be confident rocking your fro if you believe it so will everyone around you!!
