Naturally Fierce Feature: Camille

1. Tell us a little about yourself (name, hometown, etc.)

My name is Camille Lashell and I’m from a small town near Austin, Texas. Growing up I was embarrassed by my big, frizzy hair and would use tons of gel, mousse, and hairspray to keep it tamed. Talk about crunchy curls! Yuck!

2. How long have you been natural?

I am biracial, and having a white mom, I had never heard about relaxers or perms until I was about 11 years old and some of my black family members told me I should get a relaxer to tame my hair. Feeling insecure about my curls, I begged my mom to buy me a relaxer and I finally got my first treatment when I was in the 7th grade. From then on, I got a relaxer every few months.

3. What motivated you to go back to natural?

Going back natural was kind of an accident. When I was 20, I decided I wanted a mohawk, and shaved the sides of my head, while still relaxing my hair. Once the mohawk started growing out I got a cute little pixie cut, but started envying girls with big luscious curls, and fantasized about being able to rock big hair. Girls that rocked big hair just exuded so much confidence in my eyes. So it’s been about 3 years since my last relaxer and after a lot of tears, frustration, doubt and insecurity, I am now able to rock my big beautiful hair and have never felt more myself; more free. I am no longer a slave to my hair.

4. How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair as baby Diana Ross 🙂
5. What do you love most about your hair?
One of the things I love the most about my hair is my curl pattern. People often think I have a braid/twist out, or did bantu knots, and I’m like, “nope, au naturale, girl.” Lol

6. What has been the most memorable part of the journey?
The most memorable part of my hair journey was when I discovered a pick! Going from being ashamed of volume and frizz, to actually embracing it was just the most freeing feeling. I pick my hair to add volume as regular part of my routine now.

7.What is your hair regimen?
My hair regimen is super duper simple. I cowash once a week, lately I’ve even gone about 10 days, use a moisture and finger comb it throughout, then use a small amount of styling cream. After that, I diffuse until completely dry, and use a pick to add volume. P.S. Definition is never my goal. The bigger the better!!

8. What are some of your favorite products?
I’m the type of person that likes to try new things so I don’t really have any products that I swear by or that I just HAVE to have. But right now I’m using: Shea Moisture Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and Cantu Shea Butter Curl Activating Cream.
9. Any memorable reactions from others?
My family and friends have all been super supportive and complimentary of my big hair. I feel like the times are really changing, and more and more, natural hair is being embraced, and even envied!

10. Who are your favorite vloggers and bloggers?
My favorite hair blogger is Taren Guy, simply because I feel like we have similar hair textures and hair goals.
11. Anything else you would like to share?
One thing that really bothers me is when people say, specifically men in my experience,”I love your hair! Not all women can pull off the natural look.”
Why do black women have to feel like they can’t “pull off” their natural born, God given beauty? It’s sad to me and I wish that the African American culture realized that by not accepting and embracing our natural beauty, we’re being repressed.
