Naturally Fierce Feature: Dalecia

My name is Dalecia and I reside in NC. I am a working MBA student who enjoys painting, dancing singing, making YouTube videos, and playing the piano.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for about 4 years now.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I was a transitioner because I wasn’t ready to cut my hair. Instead I decided to cut about a inch off per month so that I can still have length. Two weeks ago I did a second big chop for a fresh new look.

How would you describe your hair?

I would describe my hair a wild, kinky, and curly. I have 3 textures throughout my hair (4a, 4b, 4c,). My hair has a mind of its own. I can do a style everyday and it would look different each time.

What do you love most about your hair?

I love that my hair is a conversation piece. When I am out, random people stop me and they ask me “ Is that your hair”? Four years ago I probably wouldn’t have been the person today if I didn’t decide on going natural. My hair helped me bring out my new-found confidence.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The most memorable part of my journey is the influence that I ‘ve had on others. When I first wen natural nobody on my campus had natural hair but me. So I was looked to as the ambassador of natural hair at my university. I would host natural hair events on campus, which influenced many of the young women to go natural. My journey was far from easy. It took me quite a while to figure out what my hair liked. I would by so many products that I would see women on YouTube use. Now that I’ve experimented with products and hairstyles it’s much easier than it was in the past.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos?

My favorite transitioning hairstyle would have to me the twist & curl, which I still do today. I also like to wear my hair in a Perm Rod Set.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

My family has always been supportive. After I did the second big chop my family loved it! My sister says that my taper cut slims my face and I should keep it this way. Some people were disappointed with my decision, but you can’t please everybody.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

Once a week I will either cowash or shampoo my hair. I cowash my hair with Suave Naturals conditioner or I will shampoo with Shea Moisture. I also deep condition once a week if I have time with Aubrey Organics conditioner. My favorite curl cream would have to be Cantu Shea Butter Leave In. I use castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil to seal in the moisture.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I go to so many blogs, there are too many to count! I love seeing other women and men embracing their natural beauty on Instagram. I am subscribing to so many different youtubers. One of my favs would have to be Mynaturalsistas; they each bring a different element to their channel, which I love.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

I know that people won’t necessarily agree with your decision with going natural, but you must stay true to yourself. Do it for you and no one else. It takes some time to get use to, so learn and love your hair with that in mind.
