Hey Guys! My name is Dyasia and I’m from the Bronx, NY.
How long have you been natural?
I big chopped in June 2013, but transitioned for 3 months before that, so I’ve been growing out my hair for 11 months.
What motivated you to go natural?
2 years ago I would have never imagined myself going natural. I started getting relaxers in high school, so wash and sets were all I knew. When I went away to college, two of my roommates had natural hair and this sparked my interest to learn more about my own natural hair. I started researching natural hair on websites, blogs and youtube and I finally decided to stop relaxing my hair. Going natural was the best decision of my adult life, I learned so much about myself when I started this journey.
How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair as mostly 4A with tight low porosity curls all around my head, but the hair on my nape and the very front is much looser and finer. I would have never guessed that I had curly hair before I went natural.
What do you love most about hair?
I love most about my hair is spunky and draws attention everywhere it go! It has its own personality.
What has been the most memorable part of the journey?
The most memorable part of my journey has got to be the night I big chopped. I had been contemplating cutting my relaxed ends off for awhile and one night I did it on a whim and I absolutely hated it! LOL Having short hair was such a foreign experience for me that i had no idea how to handle it but as time went on i learned to love and appreciate my hair.
What are your favorite hairstyles?
My favorite transitioning styles were braid outs. Post big chop, my favorite style was a bantu knot out. I’ve noticed that the styles I did during the beginning of my journey look completely different on me now.
How has your experience been as a natural?
My experience being natural has been mostly positive, I haven’t received any negative comments from any of my family or friends and I even inspired some of my family members to go natural as well.
What is your hair regimen?
When I first went natural I was a complete product junkie, I literally tried everything in my hair but the kitchen sink! But as time went on, I buckled down and now I only use a handful of products. I cleanse my hair and scalp with Bentonite clay every 2 weeks and co wash with trader joes ‘Tea Tree Tingle’ conditioner in between washes. After washing, I use Cantu Shea Butter leave-in conditioner and braid my hair into 10-12 small plaits and while my hair air drys. To preserve the braid out, I band my hair with hair ties every other night to stretch my hair.
What are you favorite natural hair websites?
I was absolutely addicted to Blackgirllonghair.com, and of course Global Couture, in the beginning of my natural hair journey, I received so much inspiration and good advice from reading these sites. I can’t forget about Naptural85 on youtube either, I love her!
Any advice?
The most important piece of advice I can give to anybody considering going natural is to ‘Never Give Up’ because it only gets easier.
