1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.

My name is Ebony, also known as EbSweetz. I own a celebrity gossip site, WhatsTheCelebriTea.com. I live in Maryland.

My hair journey was never something I purposefully embarked on, rather something I just fell into it. I was completely fine with relaxing my hair while everyone began their natural hair journeys because I was fully aware what my curl pattern was like. I didn’t get my first relaxer until I was fourteen years old, so I knew what I would be contending with if I decided to go natural. Even though it’s my own hair, I was still very intimidated and afraid that I wouldn’t achieve the styles I wanted. Luckily, I had a change of heart.

2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?

I’ve been natural for almost 6 years. I fully embraced my curls about 2 years ago.

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I wanted to rid myself of the unnecessary chemicals from relaxers was a big reason. I also hated having to rely on paying someone to get my hair the way I thought it needed to be to look “good.”

Once I stopped relaxing my hair, I just continued to straighten it. I did this until my hair got so damaged and dry, that I had to cut most of it off. It was time for the big chop. I was too afraid to do a big chop from the start.

4. How would you describe your hair?

My hair is very thick, curly and wavy. It varies in different areas of my head.

5. What do you love most about your hair? The versatility. I’m able to go back and forth between straight and curly with little to no heat damage. I also love the curls! I used to only love wearing my hair straight but now I love that my look features my curls most of the time. 6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?! The most memorable part of my journey is the moment where I saw the significant growth. My hair has never been this length and I never thought my hair could get this long. Little did I know, the relaxers were holding me back. Even still, it has been more difficult than easy. My hair needs more attention now but it’s definitely worth it. 7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’? Some of my favorite hair styles include top buns, wash-n-go’s, braid-outs and side braids.

8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from family or others?

Weirdly, older men (40+) would approach me whenever I wore my hair curly, but not when it was straight. Only guys my age or younger would approach me . I definitely found myself talking about my hair to strangers all the time when I wore it curly. Family has been really supportive.

9. What is your hair regimen?

I wash it every 7-10 days. I deep condition maybe once a month; I’m working on doing that more often. Then, I do either a wash–n-go or a braid-out. Favorite products include anything from the Shea Moisture line. I love their shampoo and conditioners. I can’t forget the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I also love Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls, and Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker. Eco-Styler gel and coconut oil are my two staple favorites.

10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

Taren Guy was a YouTuber that I watched faithfully. I learned a lot of techniques from her as well as what products to buy. The GlamTwinz are great too!

11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

Always enjoy where you are in your natural hair journey. No matter what length, curl, or hair type you desire, it all comes with a new set of rules and needs. Embrace what you have. You never know who’s longing for the curls on your head.
