Naturally Fierce Feature: Jocellyn

IMG_1360

Hi Curlfriend! My name is Jocellyn, and I am from Indianapolis, Indiana. When I was in high school, I let my hair stylist (who I trusted) convince me that I needed a relaxer every 6-8 weeks. At the time, I was only getting them once or twice a year. Shortly after receiving my second relaxer in a 10 week time frame, I was washing my hair, when suddenly large clumps of my hair started falling out. It was in that moment that I decided to never get a relaxer again. I transitioned, and managed to do so by keeping my hair cornrowed and using roller sets. Ten years ago, being “natural” wasn’t really relevant, so my friends and family didn’t really get it or care. For me, it was about wanting healthy hair…it wasn’t a movement or personal statement.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural just a tad over 10 years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I transitioned. Actually, I never heard of “big chop” when I went natural years ago..Not sure it was even a term or phrase then, lol.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?! I’ve just enjoyed the journey, period. I love that I’m constantly learning more and more about my hair, and what works and what doesn’t work. I really enjoy talking to other women about hair care too – that is truly my passion. If I were to identify one challenge specifically, it would be dealing with natural hair in the workplace/professional settings.

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles? My favorite is definitely wash and go…simply because its no fuss and oober big! Big hair is just more fun, anyway. I also love flexi rod styles. Again – big curls (just like big hair) are fun and SEXY! Plus, it’s a style that you can wear different ways.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? Most reactions are just kind of this look of surprise or amazement. I’ll never forget one time in an elevator this older white guy asked if he could touch my hair and before I could say no, his fingers were already there!! He apologized, but it was so awkward and uncomfortable, lol. Needless to say that wasn’t the first or last time something like that happened.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? My regimen is very basic, but effective. I cleanse my scalp and deep condition once a week. I detangle every other week. I also do a protein treatment once a month. During winter/cold months I protective style as much as possible. My favorite products are the ones that I make at home in my kitchen 🙂

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, blogs, or vlogs? My favorite is naturallycurly.com. It has a vast array of resources in one place, which is nice.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? Curlfriend! You can absolutely find enjoyment in the process of getting to know your own hair and curls. Don’t get caught up in curl patterns, types, or compare your hair to others. Appreciate your unique hair texture (because most of us have more than one texture), and find what works for you. Also, be patient with yourself as you’re determining what best fits your hair. Don’t get caught up in styling either…the number one concern should be your overall health/self image, followed by how your hair is styled! Healthy hair starts from the inside out, and everything else will follow.
