Naturally Fierce Feature: Karen

Hello world! My name is Karen and I’m from Baltimore, MD.

How long have you been natural? I’ve been officially natural for one year as of 8/1/2014.

Where you a big chopper or transitioner?

I was definitely a long term transitioner. I couldn’t see myself with short hair and needed time to grow into my “natural sate of mind”. I wore weaves and was perming my crown and edges. I got my last partial touch up in January 2012 and my last full perm in June 2011. I finally cut off my residual permed ends last year. The main source of motivation to return to natural was seeing women like Jill Scott embrace their natural texture.

How would you describe your hair?

If I had to categorize my curls, I’d say I have mostly 4a curls with a little 3c and 4b. I have a lot of hair and it’s low porosity.

What do you love most about your hair?

I love, love LOVE my hair’s versatility! I can do anything from a wash n go to super stretched twist out.

What has the most memorable part of journey?

The most memorable part for me would be the first time someone complimented my natural curls. I was in shock and actually quite surprised.

What is your favorite hairstyle?

My favorite transitioning style was a braid out set with perm rods. Currently, I live in either a puff or a twist out.

What has been your experience as a ‘natural?’

I’ve had all positive feedback. The most surprising reactions have definitely been how attracted men have been to my hair. They LOVE it!

What is your hair regimen?

On a weekly basis, I start by saturating my hair with coconut oil and Tresemme Naturals Nourishing moisture conditioner and then detangling after that has sat for at least 15 mins. Next, I wash with Alikay Naturals Caribbean Coconut Milk Shampoo. Once my hair is clean, I deep condition (depending on what my hair needs, I’m either under a dryer with a protein treatment or under the steamer with a moisturizing DC). After I rinse that out, i’ll apply Koils by Nature Shealoe leave in, coconut oil and style. It sounds like a lot but I swear it’s not LOL

Who are your favorite vloggers and bloggers?

My favorite natural hair website/blog by far isblackgirllonghair.com. I feel like I can relate to a lot the of the content they post. I absolutely adore naptural85, africanexport, gabeflowers, etcblogmag (Yolanda Renee), blakizbeautyful and mahoganycurls on YouTube. That’s a relatively short list because so many women on there have inspired me.

Any advice?

If you’re reading this and you’re trying to figure out whether or not you want to return to natural, TAKE THE LEAP!!! It’s a challenge but definitely a challenge worth embracing.
