1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.

My name is Leigha and I’m from a little bit of everywhere. I was born in St. Joe, MI but my family moved around a lot because my father was in the military.  That is where I developed a love for traveling.  I am 23 years old.  I currently attend the University of Akron, perusing my second Bachelors, in Family Development. I have a 5 year old daughter, who is the highlight of my world. I have had my cosmetology license since 2009. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  I love reading, photography and all things musical.

2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?

I started my natural journey in September of 2009 and was fully natural by December (I cut my hair very short, and by December when my hair grew out, I finished cutting the relaxed section of my hair.)  At first I wasn’t sure about wearing my hair out, mostly because I wasn’t aware of the different styles and products that were available.  So I would just wear my hair straight (yes, heat is a no-no lol) but I’m quite glad that it didn’t take away my curls!  Once I became aware of the different styles and products, I decided to go from there!

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I actually decided to go natural as a response to a challenge lol.  Somone challenged me to become natural and didn’t think I could do it, so I accepted the challenge to prove them wrong!!  And I’m quite glad I did, because I love it J I was actually a transitioner.  I started off with an inverted bob, and then when my hair grew to a certain length, I would cut it until all of the relaxer was out!  Later down the line in my hair journey (april of this year actually) I started cutting my hair shorter because of different styles I saw, and did the Big Chop.  It was so liberating and I loved it.  After all, it’s just hair, and it’ll always grow back!

4. How would you describe your hair?

I have NO IDEA how I would describe my hair honestly.  I guess I could say thick and curly most of all.  My hair loves wash & go’s, and when it was longer, sometimes it would cooperate with the twist outs as well.

5. What do you love most about your hair?

I LOVE the versatility that I’m able to work with in different styles.  I’m currently growing it back out.  I love that my hair pattern fits ME and that my curls hold.

6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

Hmmmm I would have to say that the most memorable part of my hair journey would be the entire journey.  Every time you turn around, I’m doing something to my hair. My favorite parts of my journey would be each time I had a pair of scissors in my hand.  My friends would get on me about how often I switched things up, but that’s the beauty of going natural, you’re able to switch it up often!

7. What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?

I LOVED my puff!!! You could always catch me rough & tough with my afro puff.  But besides that I’m a big fan of the wash & go.  My curls work best in that style.  I’ve learned how to do some twist outs & I’ve enjoyed theose styles as well.

8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

I’ve always received positive feedback when it came to my hair styles, colors and textures.  Many people have come up to me asking how to do their hair in different styles, or what I put in my hair.  It’s a great feeling to help others feel beautiful!  One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was at a nail shop.  I was getting my nails done and this little older lady came up to my puff and said, “your hair is so pretty, is it real?” Then she began to touch my puff and move it to see if it was my real hair! Now, I don’t mind if someone touches my hair, BUT not when it catches me off guard lol,

9. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I don’t really have one actually!  I’m trying new things that I see from websites or pinterest J  I do, however, deep condition every week. Some of my favorite products include: It’s a 10, Miss Jessie’s, Kinky Curly, Oyin Handmade and Aussie.

10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites?

I love any natural website that expands my knowledge on products, hair care & styles.  I also love websites that I can purchase different natural hair clothing.

11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

More than anything, remember that Hair is JUST hair, and it will always grow back!  It is an expression of who YOU are, so don’t let anyone try to manipulate or change how you feel you should express yourself.  Do it because YOU want to do it, not because it’s “the thing to do”.  Rock your puff, your twa or twistouts.  Whatever style you decide to rock, make sure you rock it 100% and rock it FIERCE-LEI 😉
