1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.
Hey Curlfriends! My name is Meagan, and I’m from Dallas. I am a mother to an amazing kindergartner/baseball player, full-time student, and I co-manage a physician’s office. I need a clone!
2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?
I basically medi-chopped on December 1, 2012. I call It a “medi” because I had about three inches of growth at that point, so it wasn’t quite a BIG chop..and it SURE wasn’t a mini chop because it was super short. I had NO idea what to do with it! Lol! That would mean I’m about 2 months shy of my 2 year anniversary. I would definitely say I’ve always embraced my curls. I did my thorough YouTube research before chopping, so once I did I hit the ground running.
3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve equated long, flowing straight hair with true beauty. (Not to mention a face full of makeup). The women in my family are all relaxed and have been for years. The only taste of natural hair came from my uncle – he had dreadlocks for about 5 years. I loved seeing them grow! My mother relaxed my hair at the age of 8. So since then, I’ve been flat ironed, wrapped and roller set it to DEATH. I have to admit, when I began my journey to natural there was really no sentimental value behind it, just utter curiosity. Around 2011, I started toying around with the idea of allowing my relaxer to grow out. Whenever I would wet my relaxed hair, it waved a bit. What would happen if I kept the relaxer off? I decided to get another relaxer in November of that year, and that has been my last.
4. How would you describe your hair?
I’m not too into the “hair type” thing, but for the sake of the question, I’ll say I’m 3c/4a-ish. Her name is Bunni, lol. More spice than sugar; she definitely has a mind of her own!
5. What do you love most about your hair?
I love what most naturals love: the versatility. I look like a totally different person when I straighten now, that’s pretty cool. I also love that I am not conformed to some cliché image of beauty. I am beautiful just the way that I am, with the hair that God saw fit to bless me with.
6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
I would say both. In the beginning, it was difficult to establish a regimen. I definitely spent every dime I had on products! Over time it’s become a breeze, and SO rewarding. The most memorable part had to have been earlier in the summer – I was chosen for my first modeling job and I blew out Bunni for the first time which was something I’d never seen myself doing! Seeing that growth amazed me..It’s a great feeling to know that all of the dedication to great hair care has paid off.
7. What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current do’s?
Honestly, my transitioning styles were basic. I slicked it back and bunned probably 90% of the time, otherwise I went to the salon & had it flat ironed, and wore a sew-in weave the last month before I chopped it. My go-to style now is without a doubt a TWISTOUT! I also experimented with different types of wash & gos, but now that I have found a styling technique that works for me, I love it! I wasn’t able to maintain as much moisture with wash & gos, and detangling on wash day was a nightmare. No thank you! I’ve tried different techniques such as twistouts as well, and found that the best for me is a well-moisturized, fluffy & unruly one.
8. What have your experiences been as a natural’? Are there any memorable reactions from family or others?
In the early days, my family thought that I was NUTS! My nana said, “So you’re just not going to comb it at ALL?!” It took them about 9 months to truly respect my gangsta. Lol. Now, they love it! They have seen growth, but I also think that it helped them to see me wear my hair in its natural state with confidence. My friends on the other hand have always embraced my natural hair. Now, I get love all of the time! It’s all about owning it!!
9. What is your hair regimen (including your favorite products)?
I alternate cowashing and shampooing throughout the month as many other curlies do. Every other week, I shampoo. When I do, it’s most often with Giovanni 50/50 Balanced Shampoo. For my cowash, I use the As I Am Cleansing Cowash or my old faithful, Tressemme Naturals conditioner. I deep condition after every wash, either mixing Evoo with a rinse-out conditioner or using the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque – it all depends on what Bunni needs at the time. I also incorporate protein treatments as needed. I am also a brand ambassador for Kurlee Belle, and I absolutely vouch for the entire product line! #TeamKurleeBelle
10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I have SO many! Mahoganycurls, Naptural85, EClark6, Denimpixie, TiffanyNicholsDesign (hey boo!!)…as for blogs I love BlackGirlLongHair & Around The Way Curls. The list goes on and on! I am so thankful for the naturalistas that paved the way, and continue to educate and spread knowledge. They are all some amazing and inspiring women.
11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I would encourage all of my lovely curlfriends that are just starting out to stay encouraged, set goals, and have fun! There are some naturals that don’t really aspire to grow waist length hair, but they still know what they would like to achieve and they most definitely enjoy every stage of the process. I am one year and some change in and I absolutely LOVE my hair. My goals have been set since day one, and that has helped a lot. I encourage myself regularly and of course, receive plenty of love from my curlfriends! J I’ve met SO many queens because of this experience, it’s been nothing short of a blessing. I wish you all the best of luck on your journey!
