I’m MiMi. I’m a makeup artist, entrepreneur, a mom of a soon to be 2 year old son, and lover of all things art! I’m the owner of a beauty/fashion movement called “Beat&Snatched” as well as my own site “MiMiJonline“. I’m originally from Kansas City, MO but have been an “honorary” GA Peach since 2000 when I moved here to attend Clark Atlanta University.
How long have you been natural? I’ve been rocking my curls since May 2005.
What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why? Honestly, I was just curious. I got my first perm at 5 years old and I never remembered my real texture. So one day I decided to explore and see what it was. I was a Big Chopper đ I’m an all of nothing type of girl.
How would you describe your hair? I’m a mix of a 4B/4C hair type. My hair is very thick and course.
What do you love most about your hair? I love the versatility and thickness of my hair. I can wear a lot of different styles.
What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?! When I did the big chop, it was shocking and I ended up crying because I have a big head lol. But I had committed so I found ways to rock it short and cute. And people started complimenting my hair more than when I had a perm. So I thought to myself, I guess itâs not all that bad. Actually gave me a bit more confidence.
What are some of your favorite hairstyles? The dry twist out was a go-to of mine for years. I’ve been rocking a halo twist braid a lot lately. I’m also a fan of the Bantu knot style. I’m definitely a fan of big hair.
What have your experiences been as a ânatural?â Any memorable reactions from family or others? I was the first to go natural in my family. Now most of my family is natural đ
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? Right now I wash my hair with Shea Moisture, Condition with Carols Daughter. I’m a bit of a product junkie so really whatever I have at the time works. I do a steam treatment every other week as well. My hair is very dry so I have lock in the moisture and use hydrating products. Also products that won’t strip out my color.
What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuberâs, or blogs? Mae of NaturalChica is a good friend of mine so I def follow and love her journey. The first person I saw when I went natural was “MotownGirl”.
Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? For me, how you rock your hair is a form of expression. It shows individuality and personal style. Don’t be afraid to be yourself.
