1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. (Name, where you’re from, etc)

My name is Nakia Spann, I’m from Columbus, Ohio. I’m 26, I love to travel and experience different cultures.

2. How long have you been natural?

Basically all my life. I had a couple of relaxers in high school, but I didn’t like them so I stopped getting them.

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? Why?

Since I never really got relaxers my hair always grew the relaxer out. I was just tired of flat ironing my hair all the time, but I never wore it curly because it wasn’t a thing to do. I didn’t wear it natural until I got to college and saw that it was becoming a thing to do.

4. How would you describe your hair?

Now I would say medium for the thickness. I probably have 3 different curl types from loose to tight ringlets. Soft and fluffy.

5. What do you love most about your hair?

That it is its own. I never know how it will act from a product or hair style from one day to the next. It has been an awesome journey bringing my curls back and embracing the natural me.

6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy, difficult or both?!

Seeing the difference in my curls in the months that I have not put heat in it. It was been both. Easy because my hair is manageable, but also difficult because with it being curly it gets dry very easily and I struggle with split ends and breakage. I have some more learning to do.

7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’?

I liked doing single and flat twist outs, wash n go, and buns. I’m trying to learn how to do other things, but I don’t have the time as of right now.

8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from family or others?

It was been awesome. I don’t know why I was scared to embrace my natural before. People love it. The curls and how big it gets. it always puts a smile on my face.

9. What is your hair regimen?

I try to deep condition once a month, but I need to do it more. I barely use shampoo unless I use a lot of hair products. I co wash and  use leave-in conditioners the most. When I have time to do flat/single twists, I do them the night before and usually try to wear them for a week and then take them down towards the weekend. When I wash n go, I tend to hydrate my hair everyday with water and leave in or pudding souffle. My favorite products right now are Eden Body Works Coconut Shea souffle and leave in. I just ran out of Pantene natural co wash, so I am about to try something else. I also love Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan oil. I use As I Am Double Butter cream for single twists. I also use Curlbox, so that’s a big help on finding products that work with my hair.

10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I’m a slacker when it comes to this, but I have a couple; Taren Guy, Naptural85, jsongbird624. I don’t have any blogs though.

11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

Never give up. Embracing all of you is defiantly worth it. Don’t be afraid to show your true self.
