1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.

HEY NATURALS! My name is Phyliceia Brown but I go by my childhood name Fefe. I am 19 years old and I’m from the lovely South of Jackson, MS and I am Mississippi State University sophomore #GoBulldogs!!!!

2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?

I have stop getting perms for 3 years & I say I’ve been natural for about 2 years and I did not always embrace my curls at all! I thought my hair was too short and was afraid what people would think because my hair was always long and I though I was “the perfect girl” with long hair so I hid my natural hair with braids and weave.

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

Honestly, I was a transitioner and didn’t even know I was a transitioner and that’s because we I stopped getting perms natural hair was not as in as it is now.

4. How would you describe your hair? Hmm I describe my hair as needy & thick! I reallyyyyyyy have to keep up with it in order for it to look good!

5. What do you love most about your hair? The thickness! My hair can get really big and I get so excited when it gets like that I love it!

6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The most memorable part is when I first took down a weave I had in for my senior homecoming in high school and realized that my hair was really growing!!! My mom and my sister was so shocked and I was like “omg I have hair.” The reason why we were so happy that my hair was growing is because my hair had reallyyyy came out when I was getting perms. Like all of my hair!

7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’?

My favorite hairstyles are crown twist, high puffball, 2 puff balls, braid outs, fro-hawk & sleek pull back donut.

8. Dating while natural?

I have two stories for this. My ex boyfriend absolutely hated when I became natural. He always compared my hair to others and sent me pictures of other natural hair asking me “Why don’t you wear your hair like this??” “Why don’t you style it??” “two puffballs is NOT a style Fefe.” It hurt my feelings so bad that I would cry A lot and end up covering my hair with a protective hairstyle. Now, the guy that I am with now freaking LOVES my natural hair more than me! He helps me embrace my natural hair. He even asks to do my hair for me! He buys me products and he even uses the products on his natural hair! He is the most supporting person of my hair. I absolutely love him!

9. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

OMGGG. I get so many compliments! I have never gotten this many compliments. The most comments I get about my hair is “I love your hair Fefe” “how do you get your hair like that” “your hair looks pretty” “is that your real hair.” A lot of relaxer girls also come to me about going natural and I just love to help them out because I’ve been in their shoes before. I love all the comments because it just makes being natural more fun!

10. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

Ok, everyday I moisturize my hair with the L.O.C.(leave-in, oil, cream) method when I’m not rushing. I do this at night followed by parting my hair in 4-6 sections and braiding it either for a braid out or just to keep it untangled.

My favorite leave-in conditioners to use are Kinky Curly Knot today leave-in, Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Leave-in, and Alikay naturals Leave-in. Oil: Coconut oil (unrefined) or Jojoba oil. Cream: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Eden Body Work Curling Cream, or Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk. Every week I deep condition!!! 1st step is Co-wash/detangle (I don’t shampoo unless I go swimming).

The Co-washes I use are As I Am Coconut Co-wash Cleansing Conditioner or Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Co-wash Conditioning Cleanser. 2nd: I evenly distribute the deep treatment onto my hair and let it sit for an hour with a plastic cap/bag. I use the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque or the superfruit complex 10 in 1 renewal system hair masque, or Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque.

12. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

BE REAL. I have found myself being more real then ever now since I’m natural. You have to let that inner you come out whether it is weird or not! Everyone is different! No one can judge you for your inner beauty! Also, Go for your goals! You can really do it if you just believe and don’t doubt yourself and if you surround yourself with people who believe in you they will help you achieve. BE BLESSED
