I remember as a little girl, my mom would pull out a big container of all white heart-shaped beads. She didn’t even have to say anything because I already knew what time it was: Hair Time. After washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair she would braid me up and slide a bunch of white beads on my ends to protect my hair.

Every hair time wasn’t perfect or fun, but I do remember my mom asking me to count out a certain number of beads for each braid. I was her little helper and it made me feel good to know I had an active role in the styling of my own hair.

As the mother of two very curly hair princesses, I now make sure I include my girls in the styling of their hair as well. I will allow my older daughter to count out beads, pick the color of her accessories, and/or hand me styling tools. There are times when I will show her pictures of cute styles and allow her to pick which one she would like me to do.

I firmly believe that it is very important as mothers to give our little naturals some sense of control over their tresses. Although they are not directly styling their own hair, these tasks no matter how small will help them to appreciate rather than dread hair time. We should encourage our girls to take ownership of their hair and not simply conform to what someone else tells them is appropriate. We are responsible for helping our girls develop independent ideas and a sense of pride with regards to their self-image.
