Naturally Fierce Feature: Lashana

vre

My name is Lashana. I’m 23 from NYC, born in Brooklyn raised in Queens. I love anything that can be art. My hair journey is a common one: Long natural hair as a child, first relaxer at ten and it was all downhill from there.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural since april 7,2008

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

What motivated me to transition was a website called KeepItSimpleSista. Everyone on there was so positive about growing healthy, long hair and the naturals’ progress just gave me the boost to not  want a relaxer anymore. I transitioned for two years of high school and at the end of my senior year I big chopped.

How would you describe your hair?

My hair is a 3c front/4a back combo. I have an undercut/napeshave meaning the back of my hair is shaved. I get funky designs and pull my hair into a high bun or high puff. Its Something to express my personality. I have one particular side of my head (middle left) where my hair is the thickest. I have to handle it differently than the rest of my hair. My hair is thick as a whole but my strands are thin and very fragile.

What do you love most about your hair?

My hair has been growing amazingly and the longer my hair gets the more versatile it becomes; I can do more and more styles ive been dying to achieve.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

Most memorable has to be when I big chopped. My sister scared me when she said “wait until daddy sees what you did.” I always wore half wigs so he didn’t see it but I finally told him and Instead of screaming at me, he was just excited I didnt have a relaxer anymore. My mother was natural her whole life so he wanted me to do the same.

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?

My fav transitioning hairstyle was my alicia keys inspired pulled back low puff. My current absolute favorite hairstyles are poetic justice box braids and jumbo braid outs. My braidouts come out different every time. I love it!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

When I first went natural my family teased me. My twa was not attractive so I was very insecure. After a few years of growth and learning styles, everyone around me was touching and complimenting my hair. Family members wanted to follow what I was doing. It was remarkable .

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

My daily regimen is very simple and its the same whether I have box braids or I’m doing braid outs. I use the Moisturize and Seal method. I spray my hair with lavender water or a store bought leavein then seal with my homemade Sewlcustoms hair & skin oil. You can find it on my shop (www.etsy.com/shop/sewlcustoms) then I style and put on my satin scarf on. Once a month I do a protein deep conditioning treatment.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I dont have any favorite sites. I usually google and click. Every person on this earth is different so I dont only watch one  or two bloggers or youtubers.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

My life motto is: Faith. Patience. Optimism. I apply it to almost everything in my life. Especially my hair. My hair wont become long and strong overnight. I have to care for my hair everyday and stay positive that it will stay healthy.

On my etsy I sell all natural.vegan.vegetarian products for hair and skin. As well as detangling products for even the longest of hair.
